Opening January 12th
Invocation
Handmade Paper Drawings and Books by Steph Rue
Invocation (n.): the summoning of a deity or the supernatural.
Interdisciplinary artist Steph Rue presents a series of drawings and books, exploring contemplative prayer practices in the Christian tradition. Through papermaking, letterpress printing, repetitive mark-making, weaving, sewing, and collage, the experience of prayer is captured in the process of making and viewing the work. Drawings on paper were formed by hand out of gampi or kozo fibers using the Japanese method of papermaking called nagashizuki.
Invocation was made during the Spring of 2014 in Iowa City, Iowa, where Steph completed her MFA in book arts at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. Steph’s work explores themes of spirituality and ritual, combining book arts, printmaking, papermaking, and fiber arts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be viewed at stephrue.com.
The opening reception for Invocation will take place on Second Saturday (January 13) from 6 to 9pm. For the opening reception only, additional prints and handmade books will be on view and available for sale.
